The specialist dermatologists at Platinum Dermatology use dermal fillers to rejuvenate a patient’s appearance without surgery. We use dermal fillers to correct facial wrinkles, furrows, and other signs of natural ageing in a process known as soft tissue augmentation.*
Of the broad range of aesthetic services we provide at our cosmetic dermatology practice, none has given patients more satisfaction than dermal filler injections. Their enthusiasm for this wonderfully effective treatment is mirrored by The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in their report on permanent and semi-permanent dermal fillers:
“Dermal fillers can complement surgical and topical treatments to give a greater and longer lasting aesthetic result. A combination of filler materials can be injected or inserted to give a natural contour to the face.”
We want you to have the facts on this valuable aesthetic treatment so that you can make an informed decision about whether or not it’s right for you.
What Do Dermal Filler Injections Do?
Dermal filler injections restore volume and fullness to your face, creating a natural-looking, more youthful appearance. They are an excellent non-surgical cosmetic treatment that will*
- Enhance shallow contours
- Improve the appearance of scars
- Soften facial creases
- Erase facial wrinkles
- Plump thin lips
Injectable Dermal Fillers vs. Muscle Relaxing Injections
Before we begin our discussion about what dermal fillers are, we want to remind you what they are not. Injectable dermal fillers are different from anti-wrinkle injectable treatments that use neurotoxins.
- Facial Filler Injections – restore volume to existing wrinkles and lines.
- Muscle Relaxing Injections – actually prevent wrinkles from forming. A neurotoxin is injected to temporarily paralyse the muscles responsible for creating facial lines.
Both dermal fillers and neuromuscular toxins are effective.* Which is right for you? A professionally trained specialist cosmetic dermatologist is the best person to help you decide that. We’d be happy to answer your questions at Platinum Dermatology.
Are Dermal Filler Treatments Right for You?
Dermal fillers are ideal for people who have begun to experience the first signs of premature ageing and want to reverse the process. They’re also excellent for patients who want fuller lips for a sexy pout or who want to correct minor deformities in the nose as an alternative to nose surgery.
Dermal filler treatments are not for everyone. They are not recommended for pregnant women or women who are breast-feeding. People with acne are another exception to the dermal-filler-injections-for-all rule. Acne sufferers should address their acne first, as skin conditions increase the risk of infection following facial filler treatments.
If you are generally in good health and have realistic expectations about how facial fillers can improve your appearance, you might be an excellent candidate for facial rejuvenation at Platinum Dermatology.
Types of Facial Fillers Used at Platinum Dermatology
Like many cosmetic medicine treatments, dermal fillers are available in different strengths, with different ingredients and varying lifespans.
- Temporary Dermal Filler Injections – Temporary fillers are made of collagen and other products derived from humans and animals. The effects last for less than a year, by which time the filler material has been re-absorbed into the tissues.*
We recommend temporary fillers to Platinum Dermatology patients who want to experiment with the results of soft tissue augmentation, but are not ready to commit to a more permanent transformation.
- Semi-Permanent Dermal Filler Injections – Semi-permanent fillers rely on synthetic materials that have a slower reabsorption rate than the materials in temporary fillers. The effects typically last for one to two years when, like temporary facial fillers, they are reabsorbed by the body.*
We recommend semi-permanent dermal fillers to our clients at Platinum Dermatology when they want to treat medium-to-deep wrinkles, folds and furrows, particularly folds around the nose. Semi-permanent filler injections can also be used to fill out pitted scars and to augment thin lips.
What to Expect Before, During, & After Dermal Filler Injections
The journey to facial rejuvenation begins with an evaluation. Our experts will examine the appearance of your skin to determine whether dermal filler injections are appropriate, and discuss whether additional treatments should be part of your facial rejuvenation. Based on the examination and your goals, the specialist dermatologists at Platinum Dermatology will determine exactly how to proceed. They will map out the injection sites to ensure that your treatment yields the best possible results.
To prepare your skin for treatment, an antibacterial agent is applied to the injection sites. This cleans your skin and guards against infection.
After the skin is cleaned, the injector will administer a topical anaesthetic to numb the injection sites and minimise pain during the treatment. Not everyone requires a topical anaesthetic. Some facial filler materials contain an anaesthetic, making additional numbing agents unnecessary.
The duration of a treatment varies from patient to patient. Each injection site takes just a few minutes to treat, so the overall length of a dermal filler treatment is determined by the number of sites being treated. On average, a treatment lasts about 30 minutes.
At the end of your treatment, your expert injector will clean away any guiding marks on your face. That’s it. The results are instant, and you can return to work or play right away.
Possible Risks and Complications Associated with Facial Fillers
Cold sores can be triggered by a dermal filler treatment, so we ask patients at Platinum Dermatology whether or not they’re prone to cold sores during their consultation so we can prescribe medications to minimise this risk. Another common risk is infection at the injection site, but that risk can be removed by carefully following post-treatment advice.
Other health problems related to dermal filler treatments are rare, although the injections can trigger allergic reactions including redness, itching, and swelling. Unfortunately, aesthetic complications are more common.
Aesthetic complications after a facial filler treatment are most likely attributable to an unskilled injector. The appearance of lumps or bumps under the skin occurs when a dermal filler injection is too superficial, and the filler material is visible through the skin. In some cases lumps are permanent, depending on the material used.
Another injector-based problem has to do with over-enhancement, due to the use of too much material. When a temporary filler material is used, the over-enhancement will naturally dissipate over a few months. An over-correction made with a permanent dermal filler material, however, can be visible for years.
