Most of us are seeking more natural ways to improve our skin from the inside out, and there’s no better way than by increasing your body’s own production of collagen and elastin with microneedling.

Microneedling is a minimally invasive skin-rejuvenation procedure that involves the use of a device that contains fine needles. The needles pierce the skin to create a controlled skin injury. Each puncture creates a channel that triggers the body to fill these microscopic wounds by producing new collagen and elastin.

Skin laxity, fine lines and a weakened skin texture are all inevitable players in the ageing game. Skin needling can help counter these symptoms and give your skin the boost it needs.

One of the most popular microneedling devices is the Dermapen. Effective in improving the appearance of scars, wrinkles and uneven texture, Dermapen microneedling treatment works to rejuvenate, brighten and smooth your complexion.

How does Dermapen work?

Designed for facial rejuvenation, Dermapen features multiple microscopic needles, which vertically pierce the skin. This allows for deeper absorption of active ingredients applied subsequently, whilst simultaneously triggering your body’s natural healing response – stimulating the production of new collagen.

Effective in tightening skin, boosting facial contours and improving the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and scars, Dermapen works by renewing your skin from within.

Dermapen triggers your body’s reaction to trauma, increasing the production of collagen and tightening skin. This is particularly effective in treating scars, as scars often cause a depression in the skin and the new collagen induced by Dermapen can fill that depression.

The Dermapen itself allows an individualised approach to skin rejuvenation, as the needle depth can be adjusted according to your individual skin type, the nature of your concern and the treatment area. Dermapen uses an automatic vibrating function to allow maximum penetration.

What can Dermapen treat?

Dermapen is able to treat all contours and hard-to-reach areas on the face including the under eyes and upper lip.

Fine lines, wrinkles, sagging contours and tired looking skin are visibly plumped and rejuvenated, while all types of scar tissue including acne, is effectively treated. Damaged tissue is replaced with fresh collagen deposition to reduce the appearance of indentions and uneven skin texture.

What to expect

Topical anaesthetic is first applied to your skin (it usually takes about 20 minutes to kick in) to allow for a comfortable treatment experience. Next, your skin is cleansed and prepped and then your skin expert will roll the Dermapen multiple times across your face.

You may feel a slight sting and vibrating effect as the pen glides over the skin, however the procedure is usually quite comfortable and only takes around 15 minutes.

What happens after treatment?

After the treatment you may experience some redness and mild swelling, however the symptoms should fade within 24 hours. You should be able to resume regular activity immediately after treatment.

Generally, a series of Dermapen treatments will yield the best results. It is usually recommended to undergo four treatments, six weeks apart.

You will usually see an improvement in skin tone and texture in six to eight days following treatment and these results will continue to improve, with skin becoming smoother and tighter.

Dermapen is the first step in facial enhancement and can be used in conjunction with other facial rejuvenation treatments such as anti-wrinkle injections or volumising fillers to boost results.
